Choosing a Wedding Dress When You’re Pregnant
If you’re getting married while you’re pregnant then double congratulations to you! You will, of course, be wondering about your wedding dress and how you’ll be able to find something that both fits comfortable and makes you look gorgeous… Well here are a few pointers to help you along the way to finding your perfect maternity wedding dress.
Firstly you need to work out how many months/weeks pregnant you’ll be on your wedding day so you can get an idea of how different your body shape will be. Every woman carries her bump completely differently, some high, some low, some compact and petite and some all out the front – fittings will be essential to make sure that your wedding dress fits well as you get closer and closer to both your big days!
We all put on weight when we’re pregnant, even if it doesn’t look like it (apart from that great big bump of course!) and our body shape adjusts to handle the weight of the baby: your hips and your rib cage widen temporarily to support your bump and your breasts will probably go up a few cup sizes, so be prepared to see your dress size increase even if you don’t feel that big.
If you’re in early pregnancy or this is your first pregnancy, you could simply choose a larger size in a wedding dress you love rather than finding a specific style or maternity dress. Styles that compliment and work around larger tummies include: empire and A-line gowns, Grecian goddess styles, flowing and stretch fabrics, and dresses with loose cuts. Avoid anything that is tightly fitted, bodices and corsets, for example ball gowns – not only will they be extremely uncomfortable, they won’t flatter your beautiful blooming body at all.
Make sure you choose comfortable shoes and avoid high heels, even if you were previously a stiletto pro – because all your baby-weight is unevenly distributed and pushed out the front, your balance can be a little bit squiffy during pregnancy, and a tumble down the aisle is probably not what you had in mind for your perfect wedding!
You’ll also need to think about straps and sleeves. As you progress in your pregnancy you’ll move into maternity or nursing bras, which tend to have wider straps than regular bras. This means you may need to avoid spaghetti straps for your wedding dress, or invest in a really supportive strapless bra. (Bear in mind that pregnant woman are advised to avoid underwired bras as they can damage milk ducts inside the breast.)
As for fabrics, you’re fairly unrestricted in choice, although you will need to allow for a bit of stretch or choose looser fabrics to keep yourself comfortable. Silks, satins, chiffon, taffeta and lace are all great choices. Pregnant women can easily overheat, however, so whichever fabric you go for, make sure it keeps you cool.
A great asset most pregnant women have is the pregnancy ‘bloom’, where your skin, hair and nails appear healthy and full of life. Make the most of your natural beauty (and increased cleavage!) and don’t be afraid to show off your new body – many women never feel sexier than when they’re pregnant!
